Grade 10 Geography

Our next Unit of study will be on Climate Connections. At home I ask that you please become familiar with the unit on pages 121-138. On page 133 there are some questions to check you understanding. Please answer them to the best of your abilities.

Please become familiar with the three diagrams of how precipitation is formed: Relief, Convectional and Cyclonic precipitation
April 13 SEASONS

Please hand in the worksheet by Wednesday April15
April 14  Creating a Sun Dial

Please try this out. Looks like an activity you could do outside on a nice day.  Please send me a photo of your sundial when you have tried it out. I would have had fun trying this out on the playgroud with you guys.
April 15th - 17th     Understanding Wind/Climate Connections

Please reference the textbook Pg 121-128 for this next section.

Hopefully by watching the bill nye video on seasons , you have understood that the earths temperatures vary and this has to do with the location of the sun, its rotation, and its tilt. The first section of the textbook covers that and how the suns rays are concentrated on different section of the earth.  Different materials absorb and hold onto heat different ways. Water takes a longer time to heat up, but hold the heat longer.  Solid objects will warm up quicker, but also lose the heat quicker.  This imbalance of temperature creates currents in the are, known as wind. I have added links for further explanation. (there is a bill nye wind episode on youtube too!!)

If you would like you can try the experiment with parent permission

April 29th Ocean Currents

Just like wind currents moving warm air, humid air, cold air, or dry air.  Ocean currents have a significant impact on weather and climate for different areas around the earth.  Winds, the rotation of the earth (coriolis), the sun, and gravity are major factors that drive ocean currents.

The combination of the wind and the ocean currents can cause some interesting weather patterns such as El Niño! This can effect weather for long periods of time. (causing droughts or a lot of rainfall) Below are some Videos Explaining El Niño.

May 4th Tectonic Plates

Please read Page 80-85 in the textbook. Become familiar with the key terms on page 80.
